new cards!

I made the mistake of printing an e-mail address I don't use very often on my old business cards. I had a half-concoted website up and used my @freshfishcreative.com address to seem more professional. But you're not such a pro if you don't check said e-mail. So even though I had plenty of cards to give away, they were essentially useless. Big, dumb mistake right? Riiiiiight.

I finally updated my cards and my look AGAIN. Is it bad to say that after six years of freelancing/working for myself, I still feel like I'm finding who I am as a designer? This version of Fresh Fish Creative uses line drawings of animals (zebra, camel, kangaroo and elephant) in the background with my name as the main focus and my business name as a much smaller detail. I chose to go with what inspires me now rather than sticking with a "brand" image that I'm not even sure about yet. The most important thing I added was my blog address. I show a lot of myself, my work and my interests here and it's high time I got around to sharing it.

Can't wait to give them out!

......I showed my cards to my bff and once again co-worker, Beth, and the first thing she did was critique them. How dare she! Well, I'm really glad she did. On my elephant card, there was a little bit of white on the upper right hand corner. Beth said it distracted her, it forced her eye to that spot instead of to my name. Out came the scissors! I rounded out that corner and two things happened. One, the focus was back on moi and two, the elephant became a little bit more dimensional. I remembered I had a corner rounder tool and whackety-whack, all my cards got the treatment.

As always, I'm operating under my usual philosophy for life and work: mistakes are not the end of the world!  I have much more interesting cards now and had I done it perfectly the first time (haha), I could be handing out straight-edged, straight-laced rectangular cards. Quelle horreur! My endless gratitude to you Beth for always being honest and telling me I could do/be better.

tea & cookies

Lichee Black Tea & Lacy Oatmeal Cookie
photos by Fresh Fish Creative

My good neighbor and very good friend Debbie brought over these ah-mazing Lacy Oatmeal Cookies yesterday. They were crispy, salty and sweet, so many great flavors and textures in your mouth at once. And this is my new favorite tea, a florally black tea that begs to be served in delicate little cups.

DEBBIE'S LACY OATMEAL COOKIES
1/2 cup soft butter
1 cup white sugar
1 egg
3 tbsp flour
1/2 tsp baking powder
1/2 tsp salt
1 cup oatmeal
1 tsp vanilla

Cream softened butter with sugar, then add egg. In another bowl mix flour, baking powder, salt and oatmeal. Combine dry mix with wet mix and add vanilla. Drop only 1/2 tsp of dough 2" apart on foil-covered baking sheet and bake at 350° for 10 minutes until browned. Let cool and peel off foil.

Meet Debbie! She's a dedicated art history teacher, single mom and highly loveable friend.

spots + stripes

I haven't exactly been hiding my obsession with all things Korean drama, have I? Once I stopped drooling over the hotties on the shows, I noticed all the fun they have with their clothes, from layering to silhouettes to pattern and color combinations. Today, I googled "Asian fashion" and stumbled upon yesstyle.com. Their sweater category alone contained 140 pages with 2,781 items. And yes, I did look through all of them.

Everything was pretty reasonably priced, anywhere between $15-$70. I just won't think about what sweatshop conditions people have to work in so we can buy such cheap goods. And that's including when I shop at Old Navy, Forever 21 and Walmart.

FYI, my latest fave show is Secret Garden which you can watch for free on Drama Fever! The lead character wore THE best sweaters and she inspired my focused search of this site. I actually found one of the sweaters she wore on the show. So have fun and let me know if you buy anything!

your ≠ you're

Thanks to Regretsy for sharing this travesty.
And the sad thing is, many of Wet Seal's young shoppers
won't see what the problem is with this shirt.
One of my biggest pet peeves is the misuse of your vs. you're. All day long I thank people at work to have them send back, "your welcome." It's rude to correct people, but I'm afraid that one day, because everyone begins to use and accept "your" welcome instead of you are welcome, it will become commonplace and entered in as grammatical law. Just take Sarah Palin and refudiate. After seeing this shirt on Regretsy today, I've realized I need to take action. Every time I get a your welcome in an email or ichat, I pledge to send back a snotty auto reply until they get it. Shall we take a stand together?
