Kansas City Snapshots

This week, Tina and I were out earlier than usual for The Employee Lounge to catch up with some brunch places for the blog. That left us driving around the city on a busy Friday lunch hour unable to shoot or talk to any more employees. It was cold and gray, but the cloudy skies provided great light. We turned the lens around to the city and I snuck out my camera too.

As an amateur photographer, I am always intimidated by real photographers, their knowledge, their backgrounds and especially their big, fancy cameras. I bought and love my DSLR but for me, it's just a bigger point and shoot. My list of things to learn grows by the day and one of them is definitely grasping F-stops and other photography lingo to really understand my camera and what it can do.

Thankfully, Tina graciously offered to teach me some tricks and pumped me up with flattery. I am excited to see what she captured that day and I'll link to her as soon as she posts. Click here to see Tina's view of KC.

Irina Werning

This Back to the Future project is so freaking awesome. I love how much people change and stay the same. The attention to detail is insane. Read all about Irina's project and see more amazing past-present subjects here. All photos by Irina Werning. by way of designworklife

Food & Fashion

With digital cameras, I often hear people say photography is "easy" or that they can take a picture that is "just as good." When true artistic conceptualization, skill and talent come together to create images like these food and fashion shots by Fluvio Bonavia , you see that photography is much, much more than just pushing a button. I especially love that prosciutto ring...although it wouldn't last long on my finger....as jewelry. via lushlee

365 Days

Here is another young, talented whippersnapper, 17-year-old Amy Mortimer from Warkwickshire, England. She is an art student and photographer who has a similar style to Jasmine Rubio. Her self-portrait project is called 365 days*. {housemartin}

I find daily pictures of one subject fascinating, how you can mark time passing, see the little changes day by day, the big changes when you take a step back to look at the whole picture and the familiarity as you get to "know" the subject whether it's a person or a landscape.

Photographer Kevin Trageser's subject is his girlfriend, Nadine. Go here to see the photos. Just click on each page to move on (for my less-tech savvy friends since it took me a minute to figure out also). {A Cup of Jo}

Portraits

For my wedding anniversary next month, I'm thinking about getting a professional portrait done with George. I have two options...

A traditional photograph shot in an untraditional way. Ever since I saw Max Wanger on Joanna Goddard's blog, I have been thinking about how dreamy his photos are.

OR a one-of-kind illustrated portrait by Ashley Goldberg. I especially love the ones with men in mustaches and their pets in the illustration. See more on Ashley's flickr site. via freshly{blended}

Here's a caricature we had done recently by local artist Deborah Moreno.

What do you guys think? Photograph or Illustration?
